Camp Benjamin and WIN Farm hosts the 16th National Organic Agriculture Congress (NOAC)

As a farming country, the Philippines has always been a huge exporter of rice to neighboring countries and beyond.  Over the past decade, the need for organic and natural food has increased.  The Department of Agriculture with its regional offices held the 16th National Organic Agriculture Congress (NOAC) in Region IV-A, Cavite, at Camp Benjamin, last November 12 to 15, 2019.

Onward and upward goes the organic agriculture movement in the Philippines.  The theme for this year’s National Organic Agriculture Congress is “OA 4K: Organikong Agrikultura sa Kumikitang Kabuhayan para sa Kalusugan at Kapaligiran”.  The event was attended by delegates from the Department of Agriculture, local government units, and organic agriculture advocates and enthusiasts from all over the country.

Department of Agriculture Secretary William Dar graced the event and gave the keynote speech for the event.  He expressed his full support for the organic agriculture efforts done by the LGUs and enthusiasts, reminding them of the department’s mantra: Masaganang ani, mataas na kita.  With booths set up along the halls of The Center at Camp Benjamin, local farm companies were able to showcase their organic products for the delegates to appreciate and purchase.

Plenary sessions for Korean Natural Farming and Farm Tourism happened on the first day, while the breakout sessions for marketing, organic technologies, research, and policy took place the following day.  WIN Farm, the organic and natural partner of Camp Benjamin, has put the destination on the organic agriculture trail.  The farm garnered rave reviews from farming advocates and enthusiasts who attended the 16th NOAC.

Giving your garden a new look

Nature has the power to make us feel at ease and secure.  Gardens are a great way for people to feel at ease and secure in their homes or even at their workplaces.  Though many acknowledge that it requires effort and care, its benefits are endless.

There’s no such thing as a final garden design.  As nature goes through its course, a garden has to follow suit, something WIN Farm is all too familiar with.  The first step to giving your garden a new look is to have it evaluated by a gardener or an agriculturist if you have a huge garden at home.  Regular evaluation allows one to have a good understanding of what’s happening beneath the surface and how the plants behave.  This understanding leads one to design the garden according to the qualities of the soil and plants.

Consider the spaces in your garden before you redesign.  Look into walls and boundaries, paths and patios, hedges and fences, water functions, lawns, and zoning areas to know how to go about the redesigning.  There are many styles one can follow such as sleek, modern, and rustic.  Sticking to a consistent motif is the secret to a pleasing garden design.

If you decide to redesign your garden without professional help, there are many books and online resources that can help get the wheels rolling.  Most gardening tools and materials are available in hardware stores and landscaping merchants.  Once you get the hang of it, you’ll always want to redesign your garden.

Five reasons to start a garden | #TaraNaSaWINFarm

Many people want to start a garden but blame their lack of a green thumb for never starting one.  Whether you have a huge land or none at all, there are many different reasons for getting up early and maintaining a piece of greenery.

Having a garden means providing a home for bees and butterflies.  These pollinators are crucial in keeping life in balance.  Bees and butterflies dance from plant to plant, making the world a better place.  Nowadays, almost everything poses a threat to a person’s health.  It’s high time we grow our own food in our gardens.  When fruits or veggies are picked fresh and tossed in a salad or cooked, they retain more nutrients than when bought in stores.  WIN Farm encourages guests to learn how to grow their own food.

Gardening is good for the environment.  Aside from building a better home for bees and butterflies, gardening promotes sustainability.  One lessens their carbon footprint by not participating in activities such as having their vegetables delivered by a truck or using plastic bags for their groceries.  A little self-sufficiency never hurt anyone.  In case of drought and other unexpected circumstances, having your own garden will ensure that you’ll have food on your table.

Gardening is a way to connect with nature, your family, and neighbors.  Besides being close to nature, you can share your bounty with your family and friends.  The principle of bayanihan lives when we share what we have with the people we cherish, and one of the ways we can do this is by maintaining a bountiful garden.

Eating healthy should be everyone’s priority especially in this day and age.  More and more doctors prescribe proper diet and regular exercise to prevent patients from developing lifestyle diseases.  For those with chronic illnesses, living healthy is a long-term solution to manage their condition.

Before thinking of losing or gaining weight, prioritizing overall health should be the starting point.  Eating salad in the morning can give the body an energy boost for a productive day.  For fitness enthusiasts, nutritious veggie salads make for great pre- and post-workout meals.  Green veggies are packed with nutrients such as calcium, potassium, iron, and B vitamins.  Salad staples like tomatoes, onions, and sweet peppers are loaded with antioxidants.  Vitamins C and A in the structure of the antioxidant carotenoid can be found in various salad ingredients.

Loading up on salads help in controlling one’s weight, making it the best partner in reaching the body of their dreams.  Salads containing vegetables that are rich in fiber can help one feel full quicker, causing the body to consume fewer calories than when grubbing on a meal and an appetizer.  A bowl of salad a day can aid one’s ingestion of healthy fats.

Reaching body goals will be easier with strong bones.  Healthy bone growth is vital in leading an active lifestyle.  Muscle performance is also enhanced through eating fruits and veggies.  Not only will eating veggies make your bones stronger, it will also keep your heart healthy and protected.

With all these benefits, how about we start eating the good stuff right away?

Workplace eye-candy: Benefits of having a corporate garden

In general, workplaces rarely have a hint of nature.  A day in the office consists of staring at a computer screen all day, catching a glimpse of the cubicle wall for a quick breath while suffering from poor posture.  The corporate life isn’t all colorful when you think about it.

Located in Alfonso, Cavite, WIN Farm promotes the development of corporate gardens in urban areas.  Companies are now building corporate gardens for their employees to tend and marvel at, reducing workplace stress.  Keeping a garden in the office is more than just having some greens to look at when the eyes get tired of looking at the screen.  According to a study published in 2008 by the University of Michigan, spending more time outside in close accessibility to plants can help in increasing memory retention in individuals by twenty percent.  In addition, it also extends an employee’s attention span and enhances focus, improving productivity.

Over the past couple of years, major companies have been incorporating corporate gardens in their headquarters, giving employees a chance to take a break and care for the plants till fresh produce is ready for them to bring home.  In a way, it encourages in-office teambuilding, even promoting community goodwill

According to the team at WIN Farm, employees are usually behind desks staring at computer screens all day which does not promote better health.  Maintaining a corporate garden increases physical activity among employees.  A therapeutic garden design is more than just an added responsibility to an already busy work schedule.  It helps employees take a breather and relieve stress in order so that they can be at their best at work.

The future of farming and agriculture

When choosing a career path, youths are quick to avoid the road leading to agriculture and farming.  Millennials and younger generations are encouraged to pursue studies and careers in other sectors, leaving them with no appreciation for the industry that feeds them.  This is why people’s perception on farming and agriculture needs to be changed especially in this day and age.

Here’s the reality: traditional farming practices can no longer keep up with the increasing population.  Farmers who have dedicated their lives to the industry are ageing and have no successors.  The youth are encouraged to step up and bring their A-game in farming and agriculture.  Thankfully, over the past years, farming has become a trend, with more and more people considering a career in the industry.

Rebranding is one of the industry’s major challenges.  Millennials in the media can help improve the image of farming and agriculture, to create better opportunities for the industry to grow.  Research and development also play a huge part in the field.  The farming industry needs the brainpower of the next generations to fuel future innovations in the field, as ageing farmers may not be familiar with emerging processes that can help make farming and agriculture more profitable in the years to come.
